If you know me at all, you know that I like a good cover song. I don’t know how or why I started getting into them but I think that they’re fun. It’s hard to impress people when you’re changing a song that they already know and love; so I give props to those who take on the challenge and do it well. There are TONS of BAD ones out there, but occasionally you find a gem.
Now fair warning, my music taste isn’t for everyone so you could potentially hate everything on this list! I tried to pick videos with the least amount of “cheese” or really bad picture montages but ultimately I hope you will at least try and listen to a few and give props to the clever ones. This was a fun one!
So here we go, today’s Tuesday Ten - Ten Favorite Cover Songs (no particular order)
1. La Sera - Dedicated To The One I Love (The 5 Royales Cover)
This song was originally written by the guitarist for The 5 Royales but was later covered by The Shirelles and made famous by The Mamas & The Papas (which is probably the version people are most familiar with). I just think it’s so sweet! Like a lullaby.
2. The Starting Line - I’m Real (JLo Cover)
Takes me back to middle school/high school. This is a nice up-beat pop punk version of the chill mellow original. Dare I say I like it more than JLo & Ja Rule? I may.
3. Florence + The Machine - Addicted To Love (Robert Palmer Cover)
Who can forget the legendary video with Robert Palmer performing with his “band” of models? Fun fact: Makeup was done by Martin Pretorious who used cake liner as a base and then softened it with black eyeshadow. The lipstick was a mixture of a blue-based red and an orange-based red by Chanel. You can view Martin recreating his iconic look in this video that my friends produced and directed a few years ago!
4. Milow - Ayo Technology (50 Cent feat. Justin Timberlake & Timbaland)
You start to listen to it and you think “I know this song…” but don’t really get it until the chorus which I love. It’s fun to listen to the original and this version back to back. I am not crazy about the video and the whole honey thing but that’s ok.
5. Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (Oasis Cover)
This is one of my favorites hands down. If you’re trying to woo me, play this song for me.
6. Nada Surf - Enjoy The Silence (Depeche Mode Cover)
Doesn’t quite beat the original but I still dig this version.
7. Broken Social Scene - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division Cover)
I of course discovered this version after watching The Time Traveler’s Wife. I wasn’t sure I was into it at first but after watching the movie several times (and doing girl things like cry) it grew on me. It’s a bit more haunting.
8. Scott Simons - Umbrella (Rihanna Cover)
My love for this one is up there with Wonderwall, TBH.
9. Lykke Li - Unchained Melody (Righteous Brothers Cover)
Skip to 0:46 to jump over the radio banter. I love Lykke Li so this was easy to love. She has a series of videos on her official page that are shot live (in one take) and they’re just flawless. If you’re not into slow songs then you probably won’t be into this.
10. Lights - Lost (Coldplay Cover)
I like this video because she shows how she recorded the whole cover. She did this while on tour, sitting in her van and in her hotel room. The beat and clapping was recorded using the bottom of a plastic trash can.
